I prefer to remain naive about how much disturbing crime happens in our midst and this is a great example. Police in Illinois a few days ago received a troubling phone call from an individual who told them that she was being trafficked.

When I say that April 23, 2025 was a Normal day, I'm talking about the Illinois place and not the nature of what happened in that part of the state. The Public Information Office of the Illinois State Patrol provided details of what they learned after that fateful call was made. The press release said that a distress call was received by Normal, Illinois police from a local massage spa. The person told police that she was a victim of human trafficking which resulted in the Illinois State Police Task Force 6 intervening.

Illinois State Police investigators arrived at the massage spa with a search warrant where they found the victim who was then provided resources to assist their recovery.

What are the signs that someone may be a victim of human trafficking?

The National Human Trafficking Hotline provides some tell-tale signs that you may be witnessing someone in distress including individuals who are transported to and from work by guards or escorts. They also say anyone who is not allowed to speak to anyone alone without being monitored may be a victim of trafficking. Anyone who's work includes a "strip club, illicit cantina, go-go bar, or illicit massage business" are the most likely to be coerced into actions against their will.

What can you do if you suspect someone is a victim of trafficking?

The Illinois State Police recommend contacting local law enforcement first, but also the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373- 7888 or text *233733.
