The Zagat Survey was Yelp before there was a Yelp. It started in 1979 in New York City as a collection of local restaurants' ratings. Since then it has expanded across the country, rating eateries everywhere.

They also make lists for the internet. Like one from October that listed 50 States, 50 Favorite Restaurants. Well, let's see what they thought was tops in South Dakota. And in the interest of feeding the internet's appetite for lists-based content, the faves from MN, IA, and NE.

Zagats say that the favorite restaurant for South Dakota is: Prairie House Restaurant in Freeman, South Dakota. The Survey was head-over-hills with the local skewered sheep.

The South Dakotan specialty chislic can mean various things across the state, but one thing it always means? Meat on a stick! In the southeastern corner of the state, mutton takes center stage for this bar food fave, and Prairie House, which replaced the long-running and storied Papa's back in 2014, offers multiple options for its skewered sheep, whether grilled or fried, marinated or simply salt-and-peppered.

In Minnesota their choice was Restaurant Alma in Minneapolis.

...the menu still pays homage to creative cooking with local, seasonal ingredients and gives a nod to the Scandinavian heritage of the city.

For Iowa the king of the hill was Iowa’s oldest restaurant: Brietbach's Country Dining in Sherrill, Iowa.

After burning to the ground twice in less than a year, this homey spot rose from the ashes with plates of made-from-scratch pork chops, fried chicken and pies as far as the eye

can see.

In Nebraska fave is The Grey Plume in Omaha, Nebraska.
