You go into a store. You make a purchase and sometimes the cashier will ask, would you like a receipt? What do you say?

Up until a couple of days ago I have said, as long as it's not for $300, (when making a $30 purchase) we're good to go. I recently had something happen that will have me asking for that receipt all the time.

A couple weeks ago our family headed out of town. We get back and our neighbor Carol asked, so what were the cops doing at your house on Saturday?

We didn't have a clue. I didn't give it another thought. I'd asked a policeman about it and he said, they could have been looking for someone in your neighborhood. In short, I didn't worry about it.

So a couple weeks pass. Then yesterday I'm at a convenience store and I make a purchase. I KNOW people in the store. They KNOW me by name. Heck, they know where I work. I make my purchase, we exchange pleasantries and I head out to get my car washed. Then one of the workers comes and knocks on my windshield.

Hey, did you buy gas here a a couple weeks ago and not pay for it?

After I gave it some thought I said, yes it's possible that could have happened.

I said, how much was it for?  Not much $23 so I handed her my card and said, go run it while I wash my car. Then I got to thinking. I could check. So I pulled out the Samsung Galaxy S5 I use courtesy of Sprint and pull up our account. I checked on that day. Nothing. So I'm thinking I probably didn't pay. That's when I looked further.

I checked 3 days later, you now how gas stations create a hold on your account and sure enough there was a $6.30 purchase made at the store . I remember, I bought gum and coffee before I took off that day. Yep I was there. And they rung me up for the gum and coffee but not for the gas. Then I get to thinking all Perry Mason like.

So, whose really at fault? After all, I walked into a store and the clerk only charged me for the gum and coffee who's at fault. I GET that I owed the money for the gas but do you really send the cops off to collect in the neighborhood?  They had me on camera paying for the gum and the coffee. Hell, they had my name. I feel like the only point they failed to recognize was that they didn't their job.

I'm not upset about it. Don't care either way. But I did learn a valuable lesson.

Would you like your receipt?

I should have said, no, as long as you didn't charge me $300 or neglect to ring up my gas and are subsequently send the cops to my house to collect.

Honest mistake, on all ends. There's and mine. But from now on, yes, I'll take that receipt. And I'll make sure everything I purchased or didn't purchase is listed.
