Work is beginning on reconstructing a five-mile stretch of SD Highway 42 between Bridgewater and US 81 in McCook County.

The State Department of Transportation says crews will start by milling the existing road surface. The material that's removed will be recycled into the new hot-mix asphalt pavement.

Once the milling operations are finished, the asphalt pavement will be laid down.

Traffic will be allowed one lane with flaggers and a pilot car during the day while the work continues, and motorists can expect up to 15-minute delays.

The DOT says the resurfacing work is expected to be finished by October 15, with an overall completion date of October 31.
