Another year, another Woody Allen movie, this one set in the busy excitement of New York’s Coney Island in the 1950s, when the hemlines were long and the men’s bathing suits were more like SCUBA outfits. The first trailer for Wonder Wheel is bathed in a nostalgic glow that highlights Justin Timberlake’s striped swimsuit and belies the dark, dangerous undercurrent flowing under the carnival’s surface.

In Wonder Wheel, four people’s destinies intermingle when Kate Winslet’s clam house waitress meets Timberlake’s lifeguard who dreams of a better, bigger life, and Juno Temple returns to her estranged father’s house while on the run from gangsters. Needless to say, there’s a lot going on, all highlighted by Vittorio Storaro’s gorgeous cinematography.

Wonder Wheel is closing out the New York Film Festival on Saturday, October 14, so stay tuned for our review from the fest. Here’s the official synopsis:

WONDER WHEEL tells the story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s: Ginny (Kate Winslet), a melancholy, emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty (Jim Belushi), Ginny’s rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome young lifeguard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina (Juno Temple), Humpty’s long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father’s apartment.

Wonder Wheel hits select theaters December 1.
