I had to swing by the grocery store on my way home from work yesterday; the wife gave me a list of things to pick up. On that list - Velveeta cheese.

As I was walking around the store wondering where to look (I refuse to ask for help, I'm a man after all), I noticed the Velveeta cheese slices were in the refrigerated section, but the two pound bundle was on a shelf out in the open.

Why is that? Why is the big glob kept on a shelf, but the slices are in the refrigerated section? They're the same thing except one is wrapped in foil and the other in a type of saran wrap, shouldn't they both be stored in the same place?

Well, that led me to the Internet to ask the question, "Why?" And as legendary radio announcer Paul Harvey used to say, "Here's the rest of the story."

The first thing you need to know is you're dealing with a "cheese product" and not a pure cheese. That's why it doesn't need to be refrigerated. After opening it up it's recommended you store it in the frig, but it's not necessary.

Velveeta is made out of powdered cheese and oil, that's why it's referred to on the label as "processed cheese food." It's like cheese, but according to the Government can't be called that.

As far as the Velveeta slices are concerned, the most common answer I could find is slices are kept in the refrigerated section simply for convenience sake. If someone's looking for cheese slices, better to have them all in one location.

Frankly, I don't care what it is, what it's made out of, or where it's located in the store - I LOVE IT!!! You'll always be real cheese to me baby!!!
