But that’s OK, according to Canadian Consul General for the Upper Midwest, Jamshed Merchant. We’re just good neighbors.

“It’s tempting to take each other for granted, to take your best friends or your neighbors for granted,” Merchant said. “And so you think of us as family and friends, you don’t think of us as that different. So you know, I wouldn’t blame, I wouldn’t put a blame on anyone, right? It’s just the way it is.”

Merchant, members of the Canadian Consul General’s staff from Minneapolis and legislators from Alberta and Manitoba were in Pierre at the Capitol for Canada Day Wednesday.

Merchantsaidhe likes the unique “can do” spirit of Americans.

Besides sharing the longest unfortified andopen borderin the world, Canada is the United States’ and South Dakota’s biggest foreign market.
