I had a recent facebook conversation with a friend that blamed a certain mall for her tumble in their parking lot.

During the big snow storm on Tuesday she slipped in the mall's parking lot. After the fall she posted “Learn how to actually get rid of snow in the parking lot OMG. I wouldn't of slipped and fell if they did a half ways decent job on their plowing”

I inquired if there wasn't perhaps a certain “Reasonable Expectation of Personal Responsibility?” She said, no, it was all their fault.

For those of us who live in South Dakota, don't we all accept that it's gonna be slippery after a snow storm? Can we expect any store to have their lot totally cleared after getting a 1/2 foot of snow with blazing winds creating -35 below wind chills?

Don't we have the responsibility to adapt to the conditions? You know, wear big 'ol snow boots, parka's, Long John's, and walk a bit more tentatively.

When I was a kid on the family farm and I walked behind a horse and got kicked in the chest. It hurt - bad. I relayed this to my Dad.

He said: “Don't walk behind the horse if you don't want to get kicked.”

We didn't blame the horse. We didn't blame the guy who sold us the horse. We didn't blame the guy who built the barn because he didn't put in 'stupid proof' doors that would keep me from walking in behind the horse. I was expected to be bright enough to do the right thing.

Whatever happened to taking personal responsibility and using a little horse sense?
