In South Dakota we have a way of putting our own 'unique' spin on things.

Take, for instance, our state capital. It is spelled Pierre, which is pronounced PEE-air to the rest of the world, but to us it's good old PEER.

While that one is pretty common knowledge, there's a tiny little town tucked away in Clark County, 45 minutes Southwest of Watertown, that's on the MentalFloss.com list of "20 Towns Named for Other Towns But Pronounced Differently".

It's Vienna, South Dakota, population 45.

According to the 2010 census, Vienna had 18 households, and 10 families residing in the town. That's down significantly from the 2000 census which put Vienna's population at 78 people, 28 households, and 16 families.

So how do South Dakotans refer to this little hamlet?  According to Mental Floss:

When we talk about the Austrian city, the Chicago all beef hot dog, or even the city in Virginia, vee-EH-nuh is the way to go. But for towns in Illinois and South Dakota, it's vai-EH-nuh.

By the way, two other area cities made the list:

  • Tripoli, Iowa (Tri-POH-luh, not Trip-OH-Lee)
  • New Prague, Minnesota (PRAY-g, not PRAW-g)
