The old saying 'you can't judge a book by its cover' is certainly true in the restaurant business. Some of the best food I've ever eaten has come from places that didn't look all that impressive from the outside.

Throughout South Dakota there are plenty of these 'hole in the wall' places just waiting to be discovered.

1. Rosie’s Cafe - Sioux Falls

I have been driving by this place for the past 27 years and have always heard what a 'diamond in the rough' it is. Here are the 'go-to's' according to my sources:

Anything breakfast

Biscuits and gravy

2. Meridian Corner - Near Freeman

This is the one place I've been to and I recommend the chislic. I love things you can order by the pound!

3. Charlies Resort - Near Lake City

One fan on their Facebook page likes everything:

You'll make the best food, especially prime rib, BBQ ribs, no Indian taco. Wait it's all great!

4. The Back 40 - Kimball

My sources say :

It reminds me of home cooking. Great burgers!

5. Whimp’s - Burbank

If you've ever driven Highway 50 between Vermillion and I-29, you've seen the signs for this place. Here's what you need to order at Whimp's, according to my sources:

All-you-can-eat spaghetti

Great steaks

6. The Prairie Dog Cafe - McLaughlin

According to one testimonial one their Facebook page:

The best place I've eaten in SoDak since moving here from the East Coast!

7. Toby’s Lounge - Meckling

I've known my wife for more than 15 years, and in all that time I have never heard her rave about a place the way she does about Toby's. Her assessment?

The best chicken anywhere!

I know there have go to be a ton of other noteworthy 'hole in the wall' restaurants out there. Go to our Facebook page now and let us know where your favorite is!
