With us spending more time outdoors this time of the year, would you know what to look for if you're ever bitten by a Lyme disease-carrying tick? We all know about covering up when we're outside to protect our skin from sun damage, but what about Lyme disease-carrying ticks?

If not treated in time, the disease can cause major, long-term health problems that can stay with people for years. If bitten, you can suffer everything from palsy, partial paralysis and neurological problems to vertigo and cognitive issues, However, if the disease is caught in time, it's easily treatable. The trick is just knowing what to look for.

One of the most common early signs is a rash that shows up within the first few days. What happens is bacteria actually spreads outward from the bite. That's why Lyme disease rashes usually take on a "bullseye" pattern. Not all Lyme-infected bites will result in a rash, however. Other early symptoms to look for include flu-like symptoms, fatigue, fever, and joint stiffness.

The best way to avoid Lyme disease is to prevent tick bites. If you're going to be in a thick wooded area, wear long pants and sleeves. Once you're finished spending time outdoors, make sure you do a thorough check for ticks. If you find any, remove them with a tweezers, and make sure to get the head out. Removing any ticks quickly drastically decreases the chance of infection.

Like everything else, safety precautions need to be taken to ensure that the fun doesn't get cut short!
