Note to self, it's never a good idea to point a rifle at a police officer. The end result will ultimately be prison time or something far worse.

Christopher Heuer of Sioux Falls was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison, with 22 of those suspended for pointing a rifle at Beresford Police Sgt. Dave Steckelberg.

Steckelberg shot Heuer in the arm on January 15, 2015, after Steckelberg told him to put the weapon down. An investigation into the shooting determined that Heuer was suicidal at the time.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation handled the probe, which found that Steckelberg's actions were justified.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were found on Heuer's system at the time of the incident.

Heuer will serve 8 years in prison for his actions.
