The rain might be a nuisance to some and heartbreak to Sioux Empire Fair organizers, but it’s actually welcome in Sioux Falls.

Most years after a dry July, a half inch of rain during a 24-hour period in August would be cause for much celebration.  As you recall June was a very wet month in the area with numerous records broken and the state all-time monthly record set in Canton.

July was dry by all standards.  The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls registered only .8 inches of rain for the entire month.  By contrast from June 14-16 7.71 inches of rain came down.  The August 6 mark of .54 is the highest one-day total since that deluge.

Put in perspective, we needed a little rest from the rain a while ago.  Now the rain can resume.
