Major Winter Storm Tracking Through the Central United States

A powerful system continues to bring significant, widespread impacts in the form of blizzard conditions, severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and fire weather conditions to the central United States. Meanwhile, another storm is beginning to impact the Pacific Northwest and northern California, where heavy mountain snow and coastal flash flooding are possible through at least Thursday.

Sioux Falls

Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 18. Blustery, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Tonight, mostly clear, with a low around -5. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light after midnight.

Friday, sunny, with a high near 25. Calm wind becoming south southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Friday night, mostly clear, with a low around 10. South southeast wind around 5 mph.

Hazardous Weather Outlook

Snow has generally ended across the area. However blowing and drifting snow is likely this morning from Sioux City east to Storm Lake and north to Worthington and Jackson, Minnesota. In general, expect visibility at or below a mile at times in these locations, especially in open areas. The worst conditions are expected this morning in Ida and Buena Vista counties in Iowa. Here blizzard conditions are expected at times with areas of visibility a quarter mile or less in open areas. More minor localized areas of blowing and drifting snow are possible southeast of a Yankton to Sioux Falls to Marshall line.

While conditions are expected to begin to improve this afternoon areas of blowing snow will still be possible from Storm Lake north to Jackson.

Cold temperatures are expected tonight with lows from five below zero to 5 above in most locations. Although winds will become light tonight, wind chills later this afternoon and tonight will drop as low as negative 15 with the lowest readings along and east of interstate 29.

Strong north northwest winds are likely today from Sioux City east to Storm Lake and north to Windom. In these areas expect winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph through this afternoon.

Weather Radar and Current Conditions

According to KSFY’s Shawn Cable it will be “clear and dry through the Weekend.”

We had a dusting of snow across the Sioux Falls area overnight. About an inch in Canton with heavier amounts further south. A major blizzard continues to rage just to our South and east. Whiteout blizzard conditions are likely south of Sioux City and east of Jackson and Fairmont, MN into this afternoon. If you have plans to travel south or east, be prepared for dangerous travel conditions. If you’re headed to the Twin Cities today, avoid I-90 across southern Minnesota. Take MN 60 north at Worthington.

As this storm system rolls out, cold will roll in. Today’s high will be in the teens with lows dropping well below zero in many places tonight. We will stay cold and dry through the weekend with another chance of snow by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Some accumulation is possible, stay tuned I will continue to update as we get closer.
