Waytashek Scores Season High 26 Points In Jacks’ Win
BROOKINGS, SD — Megan Waytashek scored a season- and game-high 26 points to help the South Dakota State women’s basketball (3-2) extend its winning streak to three games with an 88-55 win over Pepperdine University (2-2) Thursday in front of 1,409 fans at Frost Arena.
The junior from Lino Lakes, Minn., was 7 of 10 from the field and 11 of 12 from the foul line. Freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) tallied a career-high 13 points off the bench and senior Tara Heiser (Watertown) added 10 points.
The Jackrabbits opened the game on a 14-2 run while the Waves missed nine of their first 10 shots. SDSU took a 19-point lead, 29-10, after Young scored six-straight points on a three-pointer and conventional three-point play. Waytashek then scored 10 of the Jacks’ last 12 points to give South Dakota State a 41-17 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Jackrabbits opened with an 11-4 run to take a 31-point lead with 14:53 left. Pepperdine got no closer than 27 points the remainder of the game.
Senior Hannah Strop (New Prague, Minn.), Waytashek and freshman Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) each had six rebounds for the Jacks.
Pepperdine was lead by Bria Richardson with 15 points and Amanda Lovely with 12 points.
South Dakota State travels to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for the Puerto Vallarta Hardwood Tournament of Hope during Thanksgiving. The Jacks play TCU Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m., No. 5 Stanford Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m.
