One aspect of the January thaw is that underground utilities are under a huge amount of stress.  A portion of Sioux Falls' North Minnesota Avenue was closed on Tuesday due to a water main break.

The area in question was at the intersection of West Brookings Street and Minnesota where the water line that was installed in 1964 split open according to Jeff Dunn of the City of Sioux Falls Engineering Department.

Dunn also notes that a small section of area houses were under a boil order as the water lines serving that area did have some contamination.  The construction work on that water main necessitated the closure of the outside northbound lane of Minnesota Avenue to fix the problem.

For the near term, a temporary asphalt patch will cover the hole with a more permanent fix to come in the spring of 2015.
