Vikings Score 22 Runs In Two-Game Sweep Of Dragons
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Jenelle Trautmann recorded two wins and Emily Heinz knocked in eight runs as Augustana took down MSU Moorhead in both games of a doubleheader. The Vikings took game one 14-3 in six innings and beat the Dragons 8-5 in game two. The Vikings improve to 15-6 on the season with a 4-2 mark in NSIC play while MSU Moorhead falls to 2-19 on the year remains winless at 0-6 to open the conference schedule.
Emily Heinz crushed a ball to left centerfield with the bases loaded to make her first career collegiate home run of the grand slam variety. She finished the day with a game-high six runs batted in and Theresa McMahon turned in a 5-5 performance at the plate with a pair of RBI.
Jenelle Trautmann recorded her 13th win of the year with a five-inning, no-earned-runs performance. Trautmann scattered two hits over five innings, giving up three runs in the third, and struck out seven batters.
After two scoreless innings, the Vikings jumped on the board with three runs on two hits. Carly Peterson drew a walk and was pushed to third on McMahon’s single. Jenny Brown drove Peterson on with a groundout and McMahon stole home the next at bat. To cap off the inning, Trautmann hit a big fly to left field for her third home run in as many games.
With a 3-0 lead, the Vikings appeared to be in control, but MSU Moorhead answered with three runs of their own to tie the game. Heinz’s error at shortstop followed two Trautmann strikeouts to give the Dragons an opportunity to score. A run was walked in and Taylor Huss doubled to center to score two more runs and tie the game, 3-3.
The Vikings regained control with three runs in the fourth, capitalizing on shrewd baserunning. Heinz drove in a pair of runners with a single to centerfield. Brown drove in her second run with a sacrifice bunt, scoring McMahon.
The Vikings were in control, but poured on eight runs in the sixth and held the Dragons scoreless to win 14-3 in six innings. Heinz highlighted the inning with her grand slam to left center.
The Vikings scored in the first five innings and withstood several MSU Moorhead comeback attempts to win game two. Erin Kempf and Heinz each hit a home run and Jordan Schaffer joined those two with two runs batted in each.
Trautmann gave up just two earned runs and fanned 15 batters to record her 14th win of the season and was supported by eight different Vikings, including herself, recorded at least one hit.
McMahon doubled to lead off the game and was scored on a wild pitch after Brwon advanced her on a sacrifice bunt. To lead off the second, Kempf hit her first career home run, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
The Dragons scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. McMahon quickly erased that deficit with a solo shot to lead off the third. Trautmann sat down the MSUM side in order with two strikeouts to keep the game tied 3-3 through the third.
Augustana broke the tie when Emily Heinz belted her second home run of the day to left field in the fourth. One inning later, the Vikings scored three runs to come to a 8-3 lead.
The Dragons answered with two runs in the bottom half, but couldn’t crack into the five-run deficit the Vikings had built.
Augustana faces a quick turnaround when they host Winona State on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader.
