Vikings Run Winning Streak To Seven With Sweep Of Upper Iowa

 

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana baseball used some high-scoring offense at the plate to up its winning streak to seven games on Tuesday with a sweep of Upper Iowa at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.

Augustana scored 21 runs in the two games combined on 32 hits. The Vikings took game one 10-3, and earned the sweep with an 11-1 game two victory in eight innings.

The Vikings record jumped to 27-10 (17-7 NSIC) with the two wins. The Peacocks dropped to 9-14 (2-8 NSIC) with the pair of losses.

GAME ONE
Augustana overcame a fast start by Upper Iowa in the first inning to get a commanding 10-3 win.

Kye Winter (6-0) kept his record unblemished on the year, picking up his sixth win for the Vikings. Winter went five innings and gave up three runs – all in the first inning – on four hits. The Willow Lake, S.D. native had himself a day at the plate, going a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Jack Goihl kept his recent hot streak going 3 for 4 with two runs batted in and one run scored for Augustana.

Jake Petersen tied a season high with three hits in the win.

Tony Viger and Marcus O’Neill each had two hits and a run scored for the Vikings.

Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Winter’s two-out single got through the right side to score Alex Fink from second base.

UIU got its only three runs all in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. The Peacocks’ John Dobson capped off the quick start with a double down the right field line that scored two runners.

Winter got settled in after that, giving up just two hits the rest of the way while he was on the mound.

The Vikings pushed three runs across in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 6-3 ballgame on four hits. O’Neil and Viger’s back-to-back doubles highlighted the inning for Augustana.

A Zach Dibble triple to right center that scored Brian Duxbury from third made it 8-3 in the top of the fifth. It was Dibble’s first three-bagger of the season.

Augustana reached double digits in runs in the top half of the sixth inning with RBI-hits by Goihl and Winter to make it 10-3.

The Vikings would shut down the Peacocks offense when it mattered it the sixth and seven innings to seal the win 10-3.

GAME TWO
Augustana was in total command in game two, winning 11-1 after eight innings.

Cole Jenkins (3-1) got win number three on the year for the Vikings. Jenkins went five innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out six.

Petersen upped his hitting streak to 18 games after a 2-for-4 day at the plate. The senior from Blair, Neb. also had one RBI and scored a run in the win.

Viger turned in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, increasing his team-leading batting average to .430 through 37 games. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also drove in three runs for the Vikings.

O’Neill got three hits in four at-bats and tied a career high with four runs scored.

Goihl launched his seventh homerun of the season as part of a 2-for-4 outburst at the plate for Augustana. The sophomore catcher had two RBI in game.

Brendan Koistinen chipped in going 1 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the designated hitter spot.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead to start the contest after Viger singled to right field to score O’Neill with one out.

Augustana add two runs in the top of the third and fourth innings to push its lead to 5-1. The Vikings got their four runs on six hits. O’Neill’s triple to right center that scored Koistinen from second base was the big play during that two-inning stretch of play.

The Vikings saved their most explosive inning for last, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 11-1. Upper iowa’s pitching staff loaded the bases with no outs, Winter was then walked to get the easiest RBI in baseball to make it 9-1. Two batters later, Koistinen drove in T.J. Davis and Winter with a single through the right side.

Derek Quame made a relief appearance in the bottom of the eighth, and kept the Peacocks off the scoreboard with no hits allowed to give Augustana its seventh straight victory.

The Vikings take to the road for a four-game series with Southwest Minnesota State that begins on Friday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
