Vikings Picked Second In NSIC

BURNSVILLE, MN — The Augustana softball team was picked by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coaches to finish second in a release from the conference on Thursday morning. Theresa McMahon and Jenelle Trautmann were tabbed as players to watch by the conference.
Augustana collected four first-place votes for a total of 212 points, putting them just one point behind first place Minnesota State. The Mavericks gathered nine first place votes and 213 total points.
MSU won the NSIC regular season title with a 23-3 record; the Vikings finished second with a 22-4 record in conference play. The Mavericks also won the NSIC tournament title in 2012 with a walk-off grand slam to beat Augustana in championship game.
McMahon, a senior from Hartford, S.D., was named to the All-NSIC first team and Lousiville Slugger/NFCA All-Central Region first team after her performance last season. McMahon appeared in 64 games, starting all but one, tied the team lead in home runs with 18 on her way to batting .344 with 67 hits. She finished second on the team with 57 runs batted in and 34 walks while recording a team-high .453 on-base percentage. McMahon is also a standout in the classroom, earning Academic All-NSIC and CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 first team.
Trautmann returns for her sophomore year after having an outstanding freshman campaign. Trautmann bagged All-NSIC first team honors with her NSIC Freshman of the Year performance in 2012. Trautmann was picked as the pitcher to watch for the Vikings. The Hastings, Minn. native started 32 games in the circle, threw 145 innings, accumulated 126 strikeouts, and posted a 2.51 earned run average. On the offensive side, Trautmann led the Vikings with a .387 batting average, tied McMahon with 18 home runs, and posted an exceptional .734 slugging percentage.
The Vikings head to Tucson, Ariz. for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Lead-off Classic on Feb. 15 to start the season.
