Vikings’ Late Rally Comes Up Short

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana had a chance to take the lead with 20 seconds remaining in the game but missed two shots and 17th-ranked Minnesota State held on for the 86-81 win over the Vikings in front of 3,314 fans on Saturday night in Sioux Falls.

The Mavericks (10-2, 4-1 NSIC) led by as much as 12 in the second half but the Vikings (6-5, 3-2 NSIC) would not go away quietly as they would regain the lead with six and a half minutes to play in the game but could not hold on to it.

Daniel Jansen and Casey Schilling each finished the game with a career-high 26 points to lead Augustana. Jansen matched his career-high with 3 3-point field goals in the game while Schilling set a new career-high with 11 made free throws.

Schilling also grabbed 11 rebounds, marking his third straight double-double and his fourth of the season. Yuriy Malashenko added 10 points for the Vikings, hitting two big 3-pointers late in the game. The Vikings shot 43 percent (26 of 60) from the field, including 9 of 27 from 3-point range. Augustana hit 20 of 30 from the free throw line, to shoot 67 percent.

Minnesota State was led by Gage Wooten’s 21 points. Wooten was 7 of 8 from the field and 3 of 3 from 3-point range. He also hit 4 of 5 from the free throw line, helping MSU to 68 percent free throw shooting for the game. Zach Monaghan added 16 points for the Mavericks to go along with nine assists and five steals.

MSU finished the game shooting 47 percent (29 of 61) from the field while knocking down 11 of 24 from 3-point range.

MSU started the scoring with a 3-pointer on its first possession but missed its next six shots and the Vikings went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead after a 3-pointer by Jansen and two free throws by Schilling. The Mavericks answered by scoring nine of the game’s next 11 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Adler and Moten to take a 12-11 lead with 15:26 left in the first half.

The Vikings took the lead back after 3-pointers from Gilligan and Jansen to make the score 18-15 but three straight free throws and a Monaghan 3-pointer gave put MSU back in front 21-18 with 11:49 to go in the first half.

Minnesota State built its largest lead of the half at 27-22 but Augustana went on a 14-5 run in the next four and a half minutes to take a 36-32 lead after two made free throws by Schilling. The Mavericks ended the half on a 12-2 run over the final four minutes and MSU’s Tanner Adler hit a 3-pointer as time was running out to give his team a 44-38 halftime lead.

Augustana shot 52 percent in the first half and were led by Jansen’s 14 points and Schilling’s 11. Jansen was 5 of 6 from the field with a 3-pointer and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. The Vikings finished the half shooting 70 percent (7 of 10) from the free throw line and 38 percent (5 of 13) from 3-point range.

The Mavericks hit 8 of 18 from 3-point range in the first half, shooting 43 percent (16 of 37) from the field and were led offensively by Wooten’s 13 points. Wooten was 4 of 4 from the field with a 3-pointer and 4 of 5 from the free throw line.

Monaghan scored nine points for MSU in the first half while dishing out seven assists to go along with four steals.

MSU started off the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 52-40 lead. Including its 12-2 run to end the first half, the Mavericks scored 20 of the game’s last 24 points over six and a half minutes. Ben Shellim cut MSU’s lead to eight at 59-51 hitting two free throws with 12:56 remaining in the game.

Augustana got within seven points three times over the next two minutes bringing the score to 64-57 with 11:16 to play after a bucket by Schilling. Schilling missed a layup and grabbed his own rebound and made the basket, but missed his free throw.

The basket started a 9-2 run for the Vikings and Jansen’s 3-pointer and Schilling’s breakway dunk with 9:48 to go in the game brought Augustana within two at 66-64.

Tanner Adler hit two free throws out of the media timeout at the midway point of the second half to help MSU push its lead back to six at 70-64 but Jansen nailed his third 3-pointer of the night with 7:58 remaining in the game to bring the Vikings within three at 70-67.

The Vikings went on to score five straight points, with four coming from Schilling, to take their first lead since the 17-minute mark of the first half at 72-70.

Minnesota State regained the lead on Wooten’s third 3-pointer of the night and was up by four at 79-75 with 2:42 to go when the Mavericks called a timeout.

Malashenko got the Vikings within one hitting back-to-back 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to make the score 82-81 in favor of MSU with 58 seconds left in the game. The Mavericks hit four free throws in the final 35 second of the game and the Vikings missed two 3-pointers as MSU held on for the win.

Augustana will close-out the 2013 calendar year next Saturday hosting Wayne State at 6 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
