Vikings Extend Winning Streak To Five Games With 11-3 Win Over Bulldogs
The victory improved the Vikings’ record to 25-10 (15-4 NSIC), while the Bulldogs dropped to 7-18 (3-12 NSIC).
Game two of a scheduled doubleheader was called off due to poor weather conditions, giving Augustana the three-game sweep of UMD.
Despite cold weather and windy conditions, Michael Letkewicz (5-1) picked up his fifth win on the season. Letkewicz pitched five innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out 10 batters he faced, one off his season high.
Jack Goihl had a strong day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Vikings.
Tony Viger also had a three-hit game in the win, going 3 for 5 at the plate. Viger also drove in a run and scored a run for Augustana.
Brian Duxbury had a season-high three hits in the ballgame. Duxbury finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Vikings broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning on a Goihl single that drove in Fink from third base to make it 1-0 Augustana.
Minnesota-Duluth tied the game up a 1-1 in the bottom half of the second. Beau Goff grounded out to second base to bring in Matt Vogt.
Augustana added three runs in the top of the third inning on three hits to make it 4-1. Duxbury’s two-out double down the left field line that scored Goihl capped off the inning for the Vikings.
The Bulldogs cut it to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Jimmy Heck reached on a throwing error which allowed Skyler Wenninger to score. UMD wouldn’t come any closer after that.
Augustana got six runs in the top of the seventh to blow the game open at 11-2. The Vikings got their six runs on six hits, highlighted by a Jake Petersen two-RBI single to right field that drove in Zach Dibble and Jacob James.
UMD got a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning after Goff hit a homerun down the left field line off Troy Pilkington to lead off the inning, making it 11-3 Augustana. Pilkington settled in after that, getting the final three outs to give the Vikings the win.
The Vikings get back on the diamond on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
