BISMARCK, ND — Daniel Jansen hit two free throws with one second remaining in the second half to tie the game at 64 and send it to overtime where Augustana went on to defeat the University of Mary 75-68 on Friday night in Bismarck, N.D.

Augustana (8-5, 5-2 NSIC) trailed by 14 with 9:40 to play in the second half and came all the way back to tie the game with a second left and force overtime. U-Mary falls to 2-10 on the season, including 0-7 in the NSIC.

Augustana finished the final nine minutes of the second half on a 23-11 run, ending with Jansen’s two free throws that tied the game. Jansen was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt with one second left on the clock and he would go to the line with a chance to put the Vikings up by one and leave U-Mary with a heave as time expired.

Jansen hit the first, missed the second, and hit the third free throw to tie the game at 64 and send it to the extra period.

Jansen finished the game with a career-high 31 points to go along with 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Jansen is the first player to score 30 or more points in a game since Cameron McCaffrey scored 30 against Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 27, 2013.

Casey Schilling added 16 points and nine rebounds for Augustana while Evan Pierce matched his career-high with 11 points.

Augustana overcame poor shooting in the first half, hitting 12 of 20 (60 percent) from the field in the second half to finish the game 26 of 55 (47 percent) from the field.

The Marauders, who were led by Damonta Henry’s 25 points, shot 45 percent in the game, hitting 9 of 23 from 3-point range. Henry was lights out from 3-point range, connecting on 5 of 7 from behind the arc for the Marauders.  Marc Musungayi added 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks after a big first half for U-Mary.

The Vikings started off the first half just 3 of 11 from the field while U-Mary hit 4 of its first 7 and the two teams played to an 8-8 tie nearly five minutes into the game. U-Mary’s Musungayi scored six points in the next five minutes in the middle of a 17-9 run for the Marauders over the next five minutes giving his team a 25-17 lead.

The Vikings went nearly four minutes without a basket until Jansen was able to cut U-Mary’s lead to five at 27-22 with a free throw but the Marauders scored six of the game’s next eight points to take its largest lead of the night at 33-24.

Pierce hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to cut U-Mary’s lead to six at 33-27 but the Marauders made a basket as time expired to take a 35-27 lead into halftime.

Augustana got to the line seven times in the first half but was just 2 of 7 (28 percent) from the line. U-Mary hit 15 of 29 (52 percent) of its shots in the first half but was just 3 of 10 from 3-point range and 2 of 5 from the free throw line.

Musungayi led U-Mary in the first half with 10 points and six rebounds to go along with three blocks. Damonta Henry added nine points on 3 of 4 shooting, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range for the Marauders.

Augustana cut U-Mary’s lead to six after baskets by Jansen and Schilling a minute into the first half but Henry drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing to push U-Mary’s lead up to 11, at 43-32, with 15:30 remaining in the game.

Henry hit two more 3-pointers over the next five minutes helping U-Mary build a 14-point 53-39 lead midway through the half.

The Vikings would not go away quietly, going on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to get within five at 55-50 after a Schilling layup with 6:36 remaining in the game.

After the Vikings came all the way back to tie the game with one second left, Augustana started out fast in the overtime period with a 3-pointer from Jansen. The Vikings out-scored U-Mary 11-4 in the extra session to complete the comeback and earn the 75-68 win.

Augustana returns to action Saturday night traveling to Minot, N.D. to take on Minot State University at 6 p.m. at the MSU Dome.
