Viger Named National Player Of The Week
Earlier this week, Viger was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week after batting .600 with three doubles, one triple and three home runs in six games.
Viger helped guide the Vikings to a 6-0 record against Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC action. The Sioux Falls native started his week by recording six hits in nine at bats against the Peacocks in a doubleheader on Tuesday, which included tying a career high with four hits in game two. Viger also had four RBI in the two-game series and scored three runs.
The senior third baseman continued his offensive outburst over the weekend, getting nine hits in 16 appearances at the plate as Augustana got the four-game sweep of the Mustangs. The former O’Gorman High School standout crushed three homeruns in the series and drove in eight runs and scored nine runs. Five of Viger’s nine hits in the series were extra-base hits (three homeruns, two doubles). For the week, the senior third baseman’s numbers were something of a sight to behold: a .600 batting average (15 for 25), 12 runs scored, three doubles, one triple, three homeruns, 12 RBI, 1.160 slugging percentage, and a .667 on-base percentage.
Viger continued his strong play on Tuesday going 4 for 5 with two doubles and a home run while scoring a career-high four runs and driving in a career-high six in game two of a doubleheader. With the two doubles, Viger now has 24 on the season which currently leads all players in Division II.
Viger is the first national player of the week in program history according to best available records.
Augustana returns to action this Friday and Saturday with a four-game series at Wayne State. First pitch for Friday’s doubleheader is set for 1:30 p.m. The final two games will get underway at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
