USD’s Cue Throws Two Complete Game Shutouts Over SDSU
BROOKINGS, SD — Freshman pitcher Rachel Cue held South Dakota State to a combined four hits during two complete game shutouts while third baseman Lindsey Boyd went 4-for-6 with six runs, five RBI and a pair of homers as South Dakota softball swept the first two games of its series with the Jackrabbits 8-0 and 10-0 on Friday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. Both games were completed in five innings.
Cue faced the minimum 15 batters in game one, giving up one hit, striking out three and walking none. She would follow up by facing 17 batters in game two, giving up three hits, striking out five and walking one.
The Coyotes (27-17, 8-5) outhit the Jackrabbits (9-31, 2-15) 25-4 over the two games. Outside of Boyd, first baseman Matley Jones went 5-for-6 with three doubles and three RBI and center fielder Katie Dinning went 4-for-7 to score four runs and three RBI. Designated player Yvon Minogue also added three RBI over the two games.
South Dakota scored a pair of runs in the first inning to start game one. Boyd led off with a triple and scored on the next at bat off a single by Dinning. Dinning scored four batters later off a single by Jones.
After a solo homerun by Allie Daly in the third inning and an RBI single from Minogue in the fourth to make it 4-0, the Coyotes added four runs in the fifth inning. Morgan Hancock scored the first run off a bases loaded sac fly by Katie Cochran, and Boyd cleared the bases during the next at bat with three-run homerun to centerfield to make it 8-0.
Alyssa D’Agostino was the lone Jackrabbit to record a hit off Cue in game one, hitting a single in the third inning. She was thrown out at second during a fielder’s choice from Emily Weber during the next at bat. Weber was later caught stealing second to end the inning.
In game two, South Dakota scored one run in the first inning, three in the third and six in the fourth. Boyd scored in all three innings while Dinning and Daly both crossed the plate in the third and fourth innings. Boyd, who was one of four Coyotes to drive in two RBI during game two, hit her fourth homerun of the season on a two-run homer in the fourth.
Dinning, Jones and Minogue also all had two RBI. Dinning drove in both of hers off a two-run homer in the third while Jones hit a pair of RBI doubles in the third and fourth. Minogue recorded one RBI off a double in the first and another off a sac fly in the fourth.
With the sweep, the Coyotes gained a point in the South Dakota Showdown Series. The teams will conclude the three-game series on Saturday at 12 p.m.
