USD Spring Game Ends In 28-28 Tie

VERMILLION, SD — University of South Dakota football’s offensive and defensive units competed to a 28-28 tie at the team’s annual spring game Saturday inside the DakotaDome. News and notes on the game follow:

*  A modified scoring system was used. The offense scored points for touchdowns (6), extra points (1), field goals (3) and third-down conversions (1). The defense scored points for turnovers (4), sacks (2) and third-down stops (1).

*  There were 13 offensive series during the game which began from the own 25 (2), defense’s 25 (4), own 40 (1), defense’s 40 (2) and from the 50 (4). The offense scored three touchdowns and kicker Brian Saakvitne capped a drive with a 44-yard field goal.

*  USD’s first-team offense when led by quarterback Josh Vander Maten scored touchdowns on three of six series – one from 75 yards out, one from 50 yards out and one from 25 yards out. One series ended with a fumble near the goal line, one ended with a missed field goal and one ended with a punt.

*  Vander Maten was 8 of 12 passing for 112 yards and had 17 yards rushing on six carries. He capped the opening drive with a 7-yard touchdown run and scored on the final play of the game with a 5-yard touchdown run.

*  Running back Jasper Sanders took a handoff from Vander Maten and threw down the middle to tight end Kayl Barkley for an 18-yard touchdown pass on a series that began on the defense’s 25-yard line. Barkley had two catches for 22 yards. Austin Koch led all receivers with three catches for 57 yards, which included a 44-yard strike from Vander Maten that set up the game’s first score.

*  When Vander Maten wasn’t on the field, USD’s defense limited the offense to one net yard on 23 plays. Four sacks totaling 39 yards contributed to the net total.

*  Linebacker Tyler Starr led the defense with six tackles which included two sacks for 15 yards. He also stripped Sanders of the ball at the 2-yard line and defensive back Steve Tellefsen fell on it in the end zone for a touchback.

*  Safety Devin Taverna came away with the defense’s second turnover when he intercepted a Kyle Cichos pass near the end of the game.

*  South Dakota runners carried 28 times for 140 yards (5.0 ypc). Earv Archambeau’s 30-yard scamper during the final series was the longest run from scrimmage. He had four carries for 40 yards. Sanders ran six times for 41 yards. Trevor Bouma ran four times for 20 yards. Jordan Roberts carried eight times for 19 yards.
