The University of South Dakota was caught with a little "egg on their face" recently. It all stems from a new USD billboard located on Interstate 90 east of Sioux Falls, that contained the message, "Best in the Dakota's."

"Best in the Dakota's." Are you sure about that?

Oops! Guess who just got busted by the grammar police. The added apostrophe implies that "Dakota's" is possessive, instead of plural, like "Dakotas" as in the combined entity of North Dakota and South Dakota.

Photos of the error on the billboard spread like a wildfire on social media soon after the grammatical error was discovered.

Tena Haraldson, director of marketing communications and media relations for the university said the error resulted from a mix-up in which an early version of a design was sent to the billboard company instead of an updated apostrophe-free version.

It was just an oversight. "It happens" said Haraldson.

USD was quick to take action to get the mistake corrected, and a new billboard will be up soon, according to Haraldson.

The university also used Twitter to have a little fun with the grammar mix up.
