SISSETON, S.D. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson has presented the Purple Heart to a South Dakota Army National Guard member who served in Afghanistan.

Johnson presented the award to Sgt. David Flute during a ceremony Monday. Flute started his military service in Sisseton in 1988 with the Army National Guard. He went on to serve in the Army Reserve and deployed to Afghanistan in 2006.

Flute earned the Purple Heart for wounds he received in action in 2007 in Afghanistan.

Johnson also presented medals to the family of Private George Sorbel. Sorbel served in the Army during World War II in Company F, 3rd Battalion, 382nd Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division. He was killed in action on October 28, 1944.

Johnson presented Sorbel's family with several of his military medals.
