Two Wives: South Dakota Man serves Jail Time for Bigamy
A woman preparing for a divorce discovered something new about her soon to be ex-husband. Miranda Gustafson found proof that he was still married to another woman before her.
After alerting authorities to the discovery, 37-year-old Omar Terry of Spencer, South Dakota was charged with bigamy and sentenced to 120 days in jail on May 13, 2016 according to the Mitchell Daily Republic.
Court documents reveal Terry married Miranda Gustafson on Sept. 20, 2008, in Tyndall, South Dakota, but he was already married to Claudia Perez at that time.
Bon Homme County State's Attorney Lisa Rothschadl had also filed a habitual offender charge against Terry due to his felony record, including burglary in San Antonio, Texas, in 1999, vehicle left in San Antonio in 2000, and felony identity theft in Yankton County, S.D., in 2007. The habitual offender charges were dropped.
