The South Dakota Legislature has agreed to create two college scholarship programs.

The role of the State and availability of money to create and fund assistance to students has been discussed for years. Small steps have been taken in recent sessions.

South Dakota will have "needs based" scholarships, if the bill is signed by Governor Daugaard. We are the last state to create and fund such a program.

Also, created and funded, scholarships for students agreeing to teach in critically needed subjects. Many parts of our state have trouble recruiting and keeping teachers in math and science.

In my opinion, both of these programs will help raise the quality and quantity of students furthering their education.  Glad a strong majority of the legislators see the benefits.
