Two motorcyclists are in critical condition after a collision with a drunk driver near the intersection of 10th & Lowell early Sunday morning.

According to Sioux Falls Police, the accident call came in shortly before 2:00am. A car driven by 55-year old Cynthia Goeman of Sioux Falls was traveling north on Lowell Avenue and came to a stop at the flashing red light. She then drove into the intersection where she collided with an eastbound motorcycle driven by 24-year old Quinton McMartin and his passenger, 21-year old Michelle Tarian. Witnesses say the motorcycle may have been traveling above the speed limit.

Neither McMartin or Tarian were wearing helmets, and were thrown from the motorcycle. Over a dozen police, two fire trucks and three ambulances responded to the scene. All three people involved in the accident were taken to the hospital. Goeman was treated and released, and then arrested for DUI and two counts of vehicular battery.

Both McMartin and Tarian are in the hospital in critical condition. McMartin suffered head injuries, a broken leg and internal bleeding from the crash, police spokesman Sam Clemens said. His injuries are considered life-threatening.

Tarian is in critical but stable condition as doctors treat her for a broken leg, skull fracture and brain bleeding.

Goeman was arrested on two counts of vehicular battery, DUI fourth-offense, no seat belt, no drivers license and failure to yield at flashing lights.

It’s always smart to keep an eye out for motorcyclists, but it’s especially prudent during Hot Harley Nights weekend when thousands of enthusiasts are out and about. And please pay attention when approaching intersections with flashing traffic signals. Know the rules of the road.
