A berry lip can be one of two things: Goth, or vampy and vixenish. While the bordeaux stained lip is usually reserved for fall, celebs are breaking the rules and painting their lips in rich wine-inspired matte hues this spring and summer, too.

The best thing about the look? As demonstrated by pop divas Rihanna and Beyonce, you can paint your pout and leave the rest of your face minimally made up, allowing skin to breathe in summer.

Nicole Richie, a fashion trendsetter of the highest order, wore white-washed locks and matte mixed berry lips and was an exercise in extremes. Berry lips require touch ups and repeat application; as you can see from Nic's pose at the Met Gala, her stain was starting to wear off at the center.

So always tuck your lip product in your clutch or bag, no matter how tiny. Re-apply as needed to keep this distinct look intact.
