Trade Kevin Love Only If Andrew Wiggins is Included

LeBron James finally made his decision last Friday and is coming home to Cleveland. Afterwards, there was plenty of speculation and trade offers involving the Minnesota Timberwolves star forward Kevin Love.

Before James signed with Cleveland, there were rumors involving a trade for Love with Andrew Wiggins. LeBron signed, those rumors disappeared, and new head coach David Blatt has said that the former Kansas star and No. 1 draft pick will not be traded.

There’s also another deal on the table with the Cavaliers dangling Dion Waiters, Anthony Bennett and a first-round pick for Love.

Trading Love is a big decision, and I think Flip Saunders should only think about sending him to Cleveland if Wiggins is in the offer.

In 70 games played last season, Waiters averaged 15.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists a game.  In 52 games, Bennett, another former No. 1 pick, averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds.

Before Wiggins began his freshman year at Kansas, he was known as the next big thing in basketball. He averaged 17.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals in 35 games. With the Jayhawks, he didn’t really shine until the end of the season and exploded for 41 points against West Virginia. Meanwhile in summer league, Wiggins is dazzling. He’s throwing down behind the back 360 dunks in warm-ups, and scored 18 points against Milwaukee (Jabari Parker had 17 points).

Wiggins has more potential, but I can see why Cleveland doesn’t want to give him up. Especially with James signing a short-term deal for two years worth 42.1 million. That could open up to him leaving along with Love if the pair cannot win a title together. That’s a big what if, though. James has said he wants to stay in Cleveland long-term. Plus, at age 19, if Wiggins becomes basketball’s next star, why give him up?

I just think Waiters, Bennett, and a first-round pick aren’t enough for Love. Love is a franchise player, and adds a double-double every game with versatility inside and outside  (Shot 45.7% from field, 37.6% from deep and averaged 26.1 points, and 12.5 rebounds per game in 2013-2014).

I’ll say it and I hope Flip doesn’t give in. If Wiggins isn’t in a deal for Love, no thank you.
