Gas-electric hybrid vehicles are becoming more popular worldwide, with the Toyota Prius being one of the best sellers. However, 340,000 of the trendy vehicle are now being recalled due to a defect in their parking brakes.

The Japanese automaker states that the company has received reports of crashes, injuries and deaths. 94,000 of the recalled Priuses are in North America, and 212,000 are in Japan.

The recall is in models produced between August 2015 and October 2016. The issue stems from  the car's parking brake cable. The cable can disengage, which causes the brakes to stop working altogether.
