The world’s premiere vintage automobile rally will be stopping in Sioux Falls this weekend.

The Great Race featuring 120 of the world’s finest collector cars roll into town Friday, June 24, 2016 after driving through Badlands National Park and Chamberlain.

After one of the longest days of the race, the rally will stop for the night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The cars will arrive in downtown Sioux Falls on Phillips Avenue starting at 6:00 p.m. at one-minute intervals for two hours.

The Great Race, which was founded 33 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions and are allowed only the bare essentials – pens, pencils, race tables, instructions, Great Race-sanctioned maps, a stopwatch and a standard radio with AM/FM only. The most important rule on this journey is no electronics – that means no cell phones, GPS, laptops, tablets, etc.

Cars built in 1972 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. A 1916 Hudson Indy Racer, a 1916 Hudson Four Passenger Speedster, a 1916 Chevrolet Phaeton, a 1917 Peerless Racer, and a chain-driven 1918 American LaFrance Speedster are the oldest cars participating in this year’s event. The winner of the Great Race will receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse.

At each Great Race stop, spectators are welcome to visit with participants and get an up close and personal view of these phenomenal antique cars.

“When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” Race Director Jeff Stumb said.
