Just saying "Thanksgiving", conjures up images of families; warm and happy, gathered around a table laden with a bounty of delicious food; turkey and all the fixings, lovingly prepared and just asking to be devoured! The reality, however, for many people here in South Dakota is drastically different.

Children are out of school for the holiday and instead of thinking about football games and parades, families already struggling with hunger know this means no school lunches and no access to other helpful food programs.

This is where we as a community can truly make a difference. I know it sounds strange to say that providing one holiday meal can change the face of an entire event, but it is true. Hunger makes it difficult to think about anything else and on the one day of the year that we specifically focus on thankfulness, for many there isn't much to be thankful for.

Feeding South Dakota is asking for turkeys and cash donations to feed 500 needy friends and neighbors right here in Sioux Falls. They have partnered with Arby's Restaurants in Sioux Falls to give you an easy place to simply drop off a frozen turkey and when you do, you'll receive a coupon for a free Roast Beef Classic meal.

If making a cash donation is more your style, you should know that a $20 donation is all it takes to provide a family with a traditional Thanksgiving meal. You can make that donation right here, or you can mail it to Feeding South Dakota, 4701 N. Westport Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57107.

Drop off turkeys at Arby's restaurants or Feeding South Dakota ( 8 AM to 4:30 PM) through Friday, November 18, 2016.

Distribution of the turkeys, bags of potatoes and "fixins" will be on Saturday, November 19, 2016 in Feeding South Dakota's parking lot (4701 N. Westport Avenue) and tickets will be given out for the "drive-thru" giveaway beginning at 8 AM with the first 500 families being provided with this Thanksgiving meal.
