We remember our soldiers and those who serve out country as often as we can and rightfully so. But there is another group I would like to acknowledge and suggest you do too. They are the hard working people who work in nursing homes across the nation.

The real stars are the nurses, nurses aids and staff who help take care of loved ones when families can no longer provide adequate care. High school workers who work after school helping residents with dinner and bed time.  Right down to the janitor who takes the time to notice photos on the wall, ask questions and make sure the garbage can is exactly where the resident wants it.

Weekends. Holidays. Overnights.Help lights go on, buzzers go off. No matter what the time and day.

Help up, help down, help to the dining room, help with dining. If you've had a loved one stay in a nursing home you know what I'm talking about.

Maybe you started your day with a run this morning. Or you were busy trying to get the kids off to school and yourself off to work. Others trekked off to work to help residents eat breakfast and take medications and start the day making sure residents are comfortable.

I have relatives who work in Tyndall, South Dakota at Good Samaritan Nursing home. Arlene and Linda recently helped care for their mother and step mother along with other residents. And Scott and others who work here in Sioux Falls helping a cousin of mine daily. Add to that a long list of people who helped care for my father at Sanford Health in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

I would bet that you know someone who works in a nursing home. Shoot them an email or text or call them today and let them know how much you appreciate their work.
