Target Field Is A Winner

Saturday night, attended my first baseball game at Target Field. The Chicago White Sox beat the Twins, but the outcome didn’t matter.

Growing up in Chicago, allowed me to attend games at Comiskey Park, home of the White Sox. Since our family lived on the northwest side, Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, was the venue most attended.

There is something magical about attending a game. Until Saturday night, I had forgotten the feeling. I think the magic has to do with your troubles leaving your body as you view the field and become immersed in the  sounds, sights, and smells, which dominate your senses. Adults are smiling, kids are laughing, full of energy, eager to catch the errant foul ball, or the game winning run.

Target Field is new, yet is has the feel of an older, stately, history filled park. Not quite as grand as Wrigley or the now gone Comiskey, but close. The other fields I have attended include the replacement for Comiskey Park in Chicago. Can’t remember the name of it. Think it has some corporate title, as do most of them these days. Remember it feeling very sterile and not welcoming. Probably explains why I can’t remember the name.  The other park is The Hubert H. Humprey Metro Dome in the Twins Cities, It is the only professional sports dome I have been in. The name is easy to remember because of Hubert, and the many problems the dome has had over the years. LIke the current White Sox Park, it lacks the “warm feel” of Wrigley and the new Target Field.

Watching a game on tv, is not part of my routine. Because of my radio job, I am forced to listen to those endless pre and post games. Announcers fill time with meaningless chatter. At the ballpark, you don’t get any of the unimportant stuff. You get the game, and the fun things which happen between innings. The “Kiss Cam” and “Twins Pics” were fun.

Coach Les from the radio station made the arrangements and led the way for this adventure. He did a great job

I am hooked. Definitely going back next year. Hopefully a couple of times. Some of it has to do with reliving happy memories of my youth.

Most of it involves “getting away from it all” for a few hours. Sitting outside being with 30,000 people you don’t know, but would probably like, if you did. Soaking up some sun, eating food which tastes great, but probably won’t help the waist line. Watching men, most of whom are young enough to be a grandchild, get paid big bucks to do what I can only dream of doing today………………….playing baseball.
