A tanker fire on I-29 Monday morning caused headaches for Sioux Falls drivers after authorities were forced to shut down portions of the highway north of Tea.

The cause of the fire is still to be determined.

During the incident, police diverted traffic onto County Highway 106 as traffic on backed up to I-229. Traffic on I-29 southbound was reduced to one lane.

The fire spread from the truck to portions of the median on both sides. However, crews were able to contain the fire preventing additional damage.

There is no word as the the extent of damage to the road surface.

Police hope to have the area open to all traffic sometime after noon. Drivers should avoid the area until such time.
