A grant given to Susan G. Komen South Dakota is planned to help motivate Latina women in the Sioux Falls area to take charge of their breast health.

Thanks to a $72,000 grant from a Walgreens Breast Cancer Awareness month campaign, the Susan G. Komen foundation of South Dakota is launching a Hispanic and Latina outreach program designed to address breast cancer disparities among minority women.

This program is designed to promote early detection of breast cancer and increase the number of Latinas screened in the Sioux Falls area.

"Without the additional money, it would have been virtually impossible for interpreters to call, schedule and accomplish this", according to Belen Madrigal,  Education Outreach Coordinator for Komen SD. Madrigal says, "Now with this program, I think it'll make a huge impact.”

Providing knowledge in safe, comfortable environments to achieve the desired outcomes is what they're striving for.

Organizers of this program believe these additional resources will help lay the ground work for generations to come to have significantly better chances of surviving breast cancer.
