(NPN) -- Both of the Dakotas’ biggest cities are growing from good economies. But one is sprawling and the other isn’t, according to a new study by Governing magazine.

The Fargo, N.D.-Minn. metropolitan area’s growth is more compact than the Sioux Falls metro area’s, according to Governing. The Fargo area rated as the 35th least sprawling metro area out of 221 in the nation, with the Sioux Falls area ranking 115th.

Other regional cities and their sprawl rankings: Omaha, Neb.-Iowa metro, 86th; Des Moines, Iowa metro, 106th; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.-Wisc., 147th; and Kansas City, Kans.-Mo. metro, 178th.

The study looked at a number of factors, including population density, land use mix, activity centering and street connectivity.

The Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, N.C. metro area rated as the most sprawling and the New York, N.Y.-N.J. metro area the least sprawling.
