Strong Pitching Leads USF To Midweek Sweep Of Mary

SIOUX FALLS, SD — The University of Sioux Falls used a pair of complete game performances from pitchers Henry Ojeda and Derek Fischer to earn a midweek sweep of the visiting University of Mary Marauders and snap a four-game NSIC losing streak.

USF won the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 5-3.

Noah Coleman had three hits and four RBI to pace the Cougars (17-24, 11-17 NSIC), while Trevor Crow finished with three hits, one run batted in and drew a pair of walks.

GAME ONE
Henry Ojeda struck out three in seven solid innings to help USF take down the Marauders 4-1 in the front end of the double-header at Harmodon Park.

Coleman paced the USF offense, connecting on a pair of hits that accounted for three of the Cougars’ runs.

The Marauders (15-25, 6-14) hitters wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, drawing first blood versus the Cougars, using a one-out walk and back-to-back hits to take the early 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Noah Durkin, hitting a team-leading .363, led off the home half of the first with a single and stole second to set the table for Coleman, who stroked an outfield single to even the game at one run apiece.

USF and U-Mary traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth, when Anthony Lopez, Durkin and Gunner Peterson belted three straight outfield hits to load the bases with one out. The Cougars converted with ducks on the pond, with a sacrifice fly from Trevor Crow followed with a two-run double from Coleman, giving Ojeda more than enough cushion.

Ojeda allowed two hits over the last three innings to improve to 6-4 on the mound. The San Diego native allowed one run on six hits, walked two and fanned three.

GAME TWO
Senior ace Derek Fischer picked up right where fellow righty starter Ojeda left off in game two, as the Cougars held on to defeat U-Mary 5-3 to complete the midweek sweep.

Fischer and Marauder senior right-hander Sam Salveson (4-1) engaged in a pitcher’s duel in the nightcap, surrendering a combined four hits through the first four-and-a-half innings.

Fischer came out scorching, locating his pitches at will and using a variety of fastballs and offspeed pitches. His command and ability to get ahead of counts early gave U-Mary hitters very little to work with and the Brandon Valley product struck out the Marauder side in the fifth on just 10 pitches.

The Cougars finally broke through in the fifth, pounding out three hits and taking advantage of a Marauder throwing error to surge ahead 3-0.

The Cougars tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Dylan Dwyer and Anthony Lopez.

Fischer held U-Mary scoreless for seven innings, until sophomore Dwight Mack roped a two-run single to the right field fence to plate Jason Shaul and Derek Somerville, who led off the frame with consecutive base knocks.

USF got one back in the bottom of the seventh, when Jeremy Varner claimed first base on a fielder’s choice that also scored Peterson, who had reached on a Marauder infield miscue and advanced to third with another timely hit by Trevor Crow.

The Marauders bunched a pair of hits around two outs to scratch across a run in the eighth but Fischer induced a liner to short to get out of the inning and didn’t allow another run the rest of the way.

Fischer (5-4) struck out nine in the wire-to-wire victory, giving up three earned runs on six hits.

Senior backstop Dylan Dwyer went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Coleman, Varner, Durkin and Lopez each tallied an RBI for the Cougars.

USF will travel this weekend to Winona State for a four-game series.
