South Dakota's 125th anniversary of statehood is the impetus for the installation of a monument described as a "major work of art" to be installed at Chamberlain.

A donation of $1 million from Norm and Eunabel McKie of Rapid City and their extended family will fund construction and installation of a 45-foot stainless steel sculpture titled "Dignity."

The lighted statue depicting an upward sweeping star quilt being received by a Native American woman will be located on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River at Chamberlain.

South Dakota artist Dale Lamphere will design and build the statue, and landscape architect Pat Wyss will work on the placement and lighting for the statue.

It is expected to be built and installed in 2015.
