It's time again for the Big Sioux River Greenway Clean-Up, when the people of Sioux Falls are invited to help take care of the Big Sioux. I remember being a part of the Clean-Up a couple of years ago, and was surprised by the amount of trash that was collected. Especially the number of tires that were found along the river. So many tires, and a couch.

This year, the Clean-Up is on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2017. Volunteers are invited to come to help anytime between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM on April 22. There's not any registration required and all ages are welcome. Volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing and as the event is going to happen rain or shine.

The Greenway is the area of parks and bike trail along the Big Sioux in Sioux Falls. During the Clean-Up last year, the City says that volunteers helped remove 1,500 pounds of trash and 400 pounds of recyclables from the banks of the Big Sioux River.

“We are so excited to host this year’s Big Sioux River Greenway Cleanup on Earth Day! Earth Day offers the perfect opportunity for volunteers to come out and show their support for the Big Sioux River on this globally recognized day especially designated to raise awareness for environmental protection,” Sustainability Coordinator Jessica Lantgen said, adding, “Come out, do your part, and help us protect the Big Sioux.”

How it works is that volunteers choose which areas of the Big Sioux River Greenway they’d like to help clean up and start at the appropriate volunteer location (see below). Volunteer coordinators will be stationed at all nine locations to give directions and suggestions. Gloves, maps, and trash bags will also be provided.

Here are the volunteer locations for Big Sioux River Greenway Clean-Up.
