South Dakota’s Joe Glenn Talks Spring Football [VIDEO] [AUDIO]

With the completion of the University of South Dakota’s spring football game Saturday, the spring football season is now over in Vermillion, but now without several positives for head coach Joe Glenn and his staff, now in their second year.

In the game, USD’s first-team offense when led by quarterback Josh Vander Maten scored touchdowns on three of six series – one from 75 yards out, one from 50 yards out and one from 25 yards out. One series ended with a fumble near the goal line, one ended with a missed field goal and one ended with a punt. Vander Maten was 8 of 12 passing for 112 yards and had 17 yards rushing on six carries.

On the ground, the Coyotes had 28 carries 140 yards with Jasper Sanders running for 41 yards on six carries. Avon’s Earv Archambeau’s added 40 yards on four carries, including a 30-yard run on the final series. Trevor Bouma ran four times for 20 yards. Jordan Roberts carried eight times for 19 yards.

Linebacker Tyler Starr led the defense with six tackles which included two sacks for 15 yards. He also stripped Sanders of the ball at the 2-yard line and defensive back Steve Tellefsen fell on it in the end zone for a touchback.

Safety Devin Taverna came away with the defense’s second turnover when he intercepted a Kyle Cichos pass near the end of the game.

As for the spring as a whole, Coach Glenn told ESPN 99.1′s Jeff Harkness the benefit of having an indoor facility with the series of wintry weather the area has been experiencing outside.

After struggling in several key areas in 2012 (last in the Missouri Valley in total defense, and penalties, 9th in total offense), Coach Glenn and his staff stressed a back-to-basics approach this spring.

Offensively, VanderMaten is back for his junior season after throwing for more than 1,600 yards and running for close to 500 yards last season.  So far this spring he’s impressing coaches on and off the field.

He’ll have Sanders to help out on the ground, and Terrance Terry will try to fill Will Powell’s shoes at wide receiver.

Up front, a very young offensive line lost just one starter and is benefiting from last year’s experience.

Defensively, the Coyotes are led by senior Linebacker Tyler Starr.  Starr had an all-conference 2012 with 74 tackles and four sacks.  He’ll get help from Washington High School graduate Keyen Lage, who had 33 tackles last season.

The secondary is strong with safeties Devin Taverna and Aaron Swift having solid springs.

Up front is a question mark, with a season ending injury to Chris Wiseman, and some potential academic problems for another projected starter.

The key for the Coyotes now is to keep their spring momentum going heading into summer camp.
