By all accounts, the University of South Dakota's first season in the Missouri Valley Football Conference was a struggle, as the Coyotes finished winless in league play in 2012.

And so it should come as little surprise that USD occupies the bottom spot of the pre-season Missouri Valley rankings, leaving second year head coach Joe Glenn both dismissive and motivated by the low regard for his team heading into 2013.

There are two key things Glenn is stressing to his team this season: one that can't be coached (experience)...

...and one that can (discipline), as the Coyotes try to evolve from a team that was one of the most penalized in the league in 2012.

As for the cast of characters on this years USD team, coach Glenn likes to talk defense first, starting with pre-season all-conference linebacker Tyler Starr.

Offensively for USD, it's a mixture of experience at the quarterback position with Josh VanderMaten, an improving offensive line, some promising, but unproven talent at running back, and inexperience at wide receiver.

On special teams, the Coyotes are putting all of their hopes onto the strong leg of a young player.

The Coyotes open the 2013 season at home with Cal-Davis, August 31st in Vermillion.

WEDNESDAY: Missouri Valley Commissioner Patty Viverito
