Governor Dennis Daugaard is recognizing June as dairy month in South Dakota.

Daugaard signed a proclamation to recognize the important role of dairy farming and the dairy industry in South Dakota's economy, communities and health.

The state is home to 263 dairy farms that produce about 235 million gallons of milk each year. The state also has nine plants that process one or more dairy products.

The dairy industry provides about $1.3 billion of economic impact to the state.

Marv Post is the president of the South Dakota Dairy Producers Association. He says farmers in the state provide a wholesome, nutritious source of locally produced foods.

Dairy farm families will be hosting free, open houses this summer.
