It was back in the early 1980s that I first visited Elkton, South Dakota.

I was working for a radio station in Volga, just outside of Brookings. Back in 'those days' I did a lot of sports play-by-play, both high school and college. The Sioux Valley Cossacks were on the road at Elkton, and I broadcast the game. And I can truly say, all these years later, I still remember the friendly folks in Elkton welcoming me to town and making me feel right at home.

And isn't that what a great town, no matter the size, is all about?

With a population of 730 folks, nope, Elkton isn't the biggest town in the state. But if you're looking for a progressive city that still maintains the quiet and peace we love in a community, well...what are you waiting for? Visit Elkton!

Just 20 minutes or so east of Brookings (think I-29 exit 127, then 14 miles east). Elkton is rightly proud of their civic organizations, a great school, a wonderful museum, beautiful park and playgrounds, and just about any and every business you need.

Oh, and you might ask the folks about the time an unhappy 5-ton elephant was on the loose! No worries though, it happened over a hundred years ago...but it sure does sound fun!

But with all that being said, I think what it comes down to is the people. While I don't remember who won that basketball game I broadcast there, doesn't it really say something that I do remember visiting with some of the nicest people I've ever met?

Rather than me rattle on about it, you can just visit there website and see all that Elkton has to offer, and why Elkton is truly one of South Dakota's best 'Under A Grand'.
