A Mitchell woman has died from injuries she sustained earlier this month in a two-vehicle crash near Plankinton, in Aurora County.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Shirley Marken , 78, was a passenger in a car driven by 79-year-old Richard Marken, also of Mitchell, on September 5.

The Markens were westbound on Old Highway 16 and approaching the intersection with U.S. Highway 281 east of Plankinton.

After stopping at a stop sign, troopers say Richard Marken drove into the intersection in front of a southbound semi-truck driven by 33-year-old Jacob Sawatzky of Rosenfield, Manitoba, Canada, and the vehicles crashed.

Shirley Marken received life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Mitchell hospital before being air lifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

She died from her injuries on September 16

The Patrol says Richard Marken received minor injuries, while the semi driver was not injured.

All three were wearing seat belts.
