With the Sioux Empire Farm Show underway in Sioux Falls, those of us who live in the big city sometimes forget how important agriculture is to the economic health of South Dakota.

Case in point:

  • Agriculture has a $25.6 billion annual economic impact on South Dakota
  • Agriculture contributes $654 million in taxes
  • Agriculture is responsible for one out of every five jobs in South Dakota

When you consider the size of South Dakota, these are some amazing statistics.

  • South Dakota has 1.6 million cows, with an estimated 90 thousand bulls
  • South Dakota ranks sixth in corn production
  • The 2015 harvest totaled more than 760 million bushels of corn

So the next time you're driving down 41st Street or Minnesota Avenue, and a pickup pulling a trailer should happen to get in front of you, how 'bout instead of flipping them the finger we show them we care and thank them by giving them a thumbs up instead.
