It's part of the job description of an athletic director - be ready to move quickly when you lose a coach.

That's exactly the scenario facing South Dakota State AD Justin Sell this week, as the school is dealing with a men's basketball head coaching vacancy for the first time in more than two decades.

With Scott Nagy leaving for Wright State this week, Sell and his staff must transition from trying to keep the coach in Brookings, to now trying to find his replacement in a timely manner.

I talked with Sell about when he first learned about the possibility of losing the winingest coach in program history and the realities of competing with other schools that are able to offer significantly more money than what is available at a South Dakota public institution.

Sell did acknowledge that the recent South Dakota Board of Regents move to finally approve multi-year contracts for state university coaches will be an added resource going forward in the hiring of new coaches.
